What are the five biggest challenges international students face when studying abroad?

1 Answer

When I first landed in the UK as an international student, I was excited and nervous in equal measure. I thought my biggest challenge would be keeping up with lectures. But the real test came in all the little, unexpected moments in between.

Academically, I felt like I’d stepped into a whole new world. Back home, lessons were structured and guided. We were spoon fed if I say so myself, while here, I was made to understand the importance of critical thinking and independent learning.I remember for my essay, the word “referencing” became both my best friend and my greatest headache. I once spent alot of hours trying to format one citation perfectly only to realise it wasn’t even in the right style.

Culturally, I had to learn the unspoken rules. The first time someone asked, “You alright?” I panicked, thinking I looked unwell and sick. I quickly learned it was just a casual greeting. I worried my accent or phrasing might sound strange but I found that people valued my ideas more than my grammar. That realisation gave me the courage to speak up more and be bold about it.

Other issues were budgeting, finding a place to fellowship, navigating the healthcare system, as all of it was new. And on quiet nights, homesickness would sneak in. I learned the hard way that looking after my mental health wasn’t optional but very essential.

If I could give advice to new international students, it would be to ask questions early, even if they feel small and silly. Use every bit of support your university offers. Build friendships with people who understand your journey, but also step into circles that feel unfamiliar cause you’ll learn the most there. And be patient with yourself. You’re not just working toward a degree, you’re learning how to build a life in a whole new world.

So be nice to yourself too cause this is the first time you’re doing this and you’re doing good.
